Future-Proofing Forecourt Payments

James Hall & Co. Ltd. is a long-established Lancashire family business, operating a number of successful forecourt locations across the North of England.

Our relationship began through a referral that opened the door to conversations about improving payment technology across their sites.

Since then, Attenda has partnered with James Hall to modernise payment systems across nine Lancashire forecourts.

The Challenge

Like many forecourts, James Hall’s car and jet wash facilities were operating exclusively with cash payments. While this had worked for years, it was becoming increasingly clear that customer behaviour had changed.

Today’s consumers rarely carry cash. And when they do, it’s often only a small amount. This created a frustrating experience for customers who simply couldn’t use the facilities if they didn’t have coins to hand.

From a business perspective, this meant missed opportunities. With card and contactless payments now the norm, it was clear that the existing system was no longer keeping pace with how people prefer to pay.

The Solution

Working closely with the Attenda team, James Hall made the decision to transition their car and jet wash facilities from cash-only to fully cashless payments.

This involved upgrading the infrastructure to support modern card and contactless transactions – something the equipment hadn’t originally been designed to accommodate.

“We knew moving to cashless payments was essential not just to meet current customer expectations, but to ensure James Hall’s sites remain future-ready. This upgrade allows them to stay ahead in an increasingly digital world.”
Gavin Harrison, Business Development Manager at Attenda

The Impact

Since introducing card and contactless payments, the upgraded machines have seen a 20–30% increase in revenue across the sites.

Customers can now pay quickly and conveniently using the methods they already rely on every day, helping remove friction from the customer experience and maximise usage of the facilities.

The systems are also managed through the Vianet SmartVend Portal, giving the team real-time visibility of machine performance. This allows potential issues to be identified early, helping improve uptime and keep services running smoothly.

“Working with Attenda has been a very positive experience. The team has been knowledgeable, responsive, and easy to work with throughout the project. Gavin in particular has been a great support—always available to answer questions and ensure everything runs smoothly. His proactive approach has made a real difference to the success of the rollout.”

David Clement, Forecourt Development Manager

With modern payment technology now in place, James Hall’s car and jet wash facilities are better aligned with today’s customer expectations – and ready to support the next generation of payment innovations.

The success of the project has strengthened the partnership between James Hall and Attenda, with ongoing discussions around further opportunities to enhance site performance and operational efficiency.
